What is Choi Kwang-Do?
Choi Kwang-Do (the art of Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi) is a dynamic, innovative approach to martial arts training. It is generally recognized to be the fastest growing martial arts system in the world. Founded by Master Choi, 9th Degree Black Belt, Choi Kwang-Do is the culmination of his observations and conclusions drawn from more than 40 years training and teaching in martial arts and his studies of human biomechanics as well as kinesiology. The emphasis is on the personal and social development of the individual, rather than on sports competition. Choi Kwang-Do is non-contact and non-competitive, your progress is judged, not in terms of how you perform compared to others, but purely in terms of the progress you make in relation to yourself and your own ability.
How is Choi Kwang-Do different from other martial arts?
Unlike other martial arts, Choi Kwang-Do has had scientific study in the development of it's technique. Biomechanical studies have been done at several universities, which demonstrate its superiority of power generation and safety to the practitioner. In Choi Kwang-Do all the movements are performed with the body weight moving in the same direction as the punch or kick with the limb in question performing a smooth fluid follow-through. All movements done in the air are fluid and relaxed enabling the practitioner to work more aerobically without any stress to the joints.
Who would Choi Kwang-Do be suited for?
This martial art is especially suited for people who's main concern is self-defense and cardiovascular fitness. It is suited for professional people because they do not have to worry about visible injuries interfering with their normal day to day lives.
What are thebenefits of Choi Kwang-Do for my child?
The major benefits for kids are increased self-confidence, improved discipline and better self-respect. Kids classes are designed to be energetic, educational and most of all fun. Students are encouraged to train and improve themselves through positive support - not intimidation.
What are the benefits of Choi Kwang-Do for adults?
The major benefits for adults are increased endurance, increased flexibility, concentration and stress reduction. Choi Kwang-Do is taught according to individual needs and level of skill. You learn an effective means of self-defense. Another benefit is having a goal to work towards (first your black belt and then the higher degree black belt) keeps one motivated and energetic!
Where did Choi Kwang Do originate and is it based on religion?
Grand Master Choi is of Korean origin and derives many Choi Kwang Do's traditions and customs, as well as its terminology, from Korea’s own heritage. Aspects such as bowing, the demonstration of respect for seniors and elders, loyalty to one’s family and the emphasis placed on patience, self-discipline, courtesy and humility are all examples of traditional oriental philosophy. Another important historical influence on Choi Kwang-Do’s philosophy is the idea of Musado or “way of the warrior spirit”. This philosophy, incorporating bravery in battle and never give up attitude, was based on the heroic deeds of an ancient Korean group called the Hwarang Do. Through arduous mental and physical training these warriors were able to unite three warring kingdoms of Korea for the first time in its history. The martial art itself does aim to enhance the human spirit not an individual's spirituality or religious beliefs. Pledge and Principles of Choi Kwang-Do The development of mental strength and a positive attitude is important for all Choi Kwang-Do students. The Pledge and the Principles of Choi Kwang-Do embody this and are spoken out loud at the beginning of each class. Adult students recite the Pledge and children recite the Promise, which is easier for them to understand. All students are expected to apply the values of the Pledge and Principles to their daily lives both in and out of the Dojang.
